New eco-responsible outlet for the SAQ: ÉEQ commends the use of products made with recycled materials

Montréal, June 12, 2015 – Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ) congratulates the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) on the opening of a new eco-responsible outlet at Jean-Talon Market. An exceptional showcase for Quebec entrepreneurs who develop innovative products from recycled materials, the SAQ’s new building is outfitted with sustainable indoor and outdoor finishes, such as ecological floor tiles made with processed glass and plastic bags collected via curbside recycling.

This news fits perfectly with ÉEQ’s efforts to encourage the development of market outlets for recycled materials collected via the curbside recycling system. In fact, ÉEQ announced last week its intention to invest $40 million in technologies adapted to mixed-materials sorting so as to ensure that all Quebec sorting centres are equipped to produce sufficient quantities of high-quality recycled glass to satisfy market demand in Quebec.

“The Jean-Talon Market store is an outstanding opportunity to show the public how these applications can give a second life to recycled materials. It is actually up to each and every one of us to choose such products more often. We hope this building will also serve as a showcase for local entrepreneurs who contribute to the growth of innovative markets for recycled glass,” said Virginie Bussières, ÉEQ’s Director, Communications and Public Affairs.

Several of the many eco-responsible innovations highlighted at the opening of the store give a second life to glass, particularly ecological floor tiles by Gaudreau Environnement, paving stones and an outdoor concrete slab made with Verrox glass powder by Tricentris, and a public bench made with ultra-high performance concrete containing recycled glass, offered by the Université de Sherbrooke’s Chaire SAQ and developed in cooperation with Bétons Génial.

and collects company contributions, which are then redistributed to finance municipal curbside recycling services in Quebec. ÉEQ also encourages innovation and sharing of best practices in order to optimize the recyclable materials value chain. To do so, ÉEQ cooperates, on the one hand, with companies to reduce quantities of materials at the source and encourage the use of recyclable materials, as well as with municipalities to increase recycling and the economic value of recovered materials. ÉEQ is a private non-profit organization created by companies that put containers, packaging and printed matter on Quebec’s market. The organization was accredited by RECYC-QUÉBEC in 2005 under the Environment Quality Act.
