PUBLICATION OF THE NEW REGULATION IS POSTPONED

The Ministère du Développement durable, de l’Environnement, de la Faune et des Parcs has informed us that the new regulation on the compensation of municipal curbside recycling services, initially set for May 2013, is now expected in the fall. Éco Entreprises Québec therefore reminds you that the 2013 Schedule of Contributions is not yet effective. The Schedule submitted to RECYC-QUÉBEC in December 2012 will need to be adjusted by the government once the new regulation is published. Further details will be provided in upcoming newsletters.

Léger survey | Recovery bins: Up to half of residents are confused

The draft amendment to the regulation submitted last January proposed that costs associated with orphan materials be shared by municipalities and companies. Such materials account for as much as 15% of recycling bin contents. ÉEQ has expressed opposition to that sharing of costs, saying that municipalities should bear the entire responsibility. ÉEQ drew excellent media coverage last August thanks to activities that raised awareness among elected officials and government authorities and the publication of a Léger survey on the public’s recycling habits.

ÉEQ, MAJOR PARTNER IN THE CONFERENCE ON CANADIAN STEWARDSHIP, SEPTEMBER 17 AND 18, 2013

For years, ÉEQ has been a proud partner of the Conference on Canadian Stewardship, a biennial event that, this year, will be held under the theme Producer Responsibility – Its Here to Stay

We will be there again this year Kiosk 19 and invite you to attend ÉEQ’s two presentations. On September 18, Maryse Vermette, ÉEQ President and CEO, and Denis Brisebois, Board Chairman, will talk about “Challenges and Opportunities Towards Harmonization.” The topic is particularly relevant for companies who do business in multiple Canadian provinces. For ÉEQ, harmonization essentially involves sharing best practices and determining similar methodologies and procedures across provincial jurisdictions in order to simplify reporting by companies subject to extended producer responsibility obligations throughout the country. In this framework, ÉEQ will work on finding areas where we can come together, while still complying with requirements specific to our jurisdiction.

The other presentation will be given by Marina Pietrosel, Director of Technical Services – Optimization, who will provide a sneak preview of OptimEco.ca, an interactive portal for the optimization of packaging and printed matter. The portal will be officially launched on October 30, 2013. ÉEQ will provide a recap of these flagship events for provincial eco-organizations in its next newsletter.
