ÉEQ has noted that some companies are making serious efforts to adopt materials that are compatible with recycling streams in place in the province and, aware of the value added of greener products, the organization is developing some practical tools to support packaging optimization. Beyond a simple reduction in volume, optimization refers to the overall improvement of the product and ensuring that it is based on the life cycle thinking in consideration of environmental, economic and social factors.

In 2011, in the Companies Section, ÉEQ will provide tools to companies that express a willingness to rethink their primary, secondary or tertiary packaging.

The Voluntary Code for the optimization of containers, packaging and printed matter, the first pan-Canadian initiative to secure company commitment while providing a framework to stimulate, demonstrate and promote best practices in packaging. Case studies from Europe and elsewhere in the world will be highlighted.

In addition, technical fact sheets that contain recommendations based on expert opinions will guide companies in making informed decisions about packaging.
